UPPER LIP LIFT
A lip lift is a simple surgical procedure that reduces the distance between the patient’s nose and upper lip, while increase fullness for a disproportionately thin upper lip.
As you become older, your lips may lose their youthful plumpness, become thinner, and the distance between the nose and the upper lip can become longer due to the downward migration of the facial tissues. The result of this is an upper lip inversion. In other words, the red vermillion colour of the upper lip diminishes in the mouth. Also, an elongated upper lip can cover the upper teeth when speaking, making your face look older.
The upper lip lift lifts the middle part of the face, which makes the face look youthful and the lips appear lively and plump. A lip lift can help to harmonise the facial features and add symmetry.
You are the right candidate for a lip lift if:
• The distance between your nose and the upper lip is more than 1.5 cm;
• Your upper lip is disproportionately thin compared to the lower lip;
• You want a lasting result;
• Lip plumping procedures with fillers do not give you the desired result.
Course of the surgery
1. Consultation with a surgeon
During the consultation, the surgeon will examine you to assess your physical condition and facial anatomy. Together, you will discuss the surgery options, techniques and any questions you may have regarding the surgery.
2. Preparation for the surgery
To achieve the best results, preparing for the surgery is important, so you should give up smoking, alcohol and certain medications for a period of time. You will also be asked to have some blood tests before the surgery.
3. Surgery
The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, and takes about 1 hour. During the surgery, the plastic and reconstructive surgeon makes an incision below the nostrils, removes a strip of skin and stitches the incision with an extremely fine surgical suture.
4. Results and recovery
The recovery time varies for each individual patient, but usually it lasts 2 to 3 weeks. You may need to take painkillers once the anaesthetic wears off. The postoperative result will be visible immediately, while the result is assessed after the tissue swelling subsides, and takes its final form 2-3 months after the surgery. The scar is extremely thin and will hardly be seen. With the right scar treatment products, it will fade over the years.
